With a few hangovers kicking in, and playing a fast, fit student side things went from bad to worse. The team found themselves 5 0 down after 20 minutes having conceded a number of very soft goals.
This seemed to awaken a few key players and Swansea slowly started to put together a few good moves. Steve Smith pulled one back following one of his usual one handed runs down the left followed by a clever finish from a tight angle. Richard Jones, with his mind more on his post match meal down La Parrilla, also came to life and got us right back into it with a fine finish into the corner from a solo run and a decent short corner strike. The students were getting rattled at seeing their sizeable lead eroded but sadly were allowed another soft goal on the stroke of half time so 6 3 at half time and all to do.
The first 15 minutes of the 2nd half were a far tighter affair with no more goals scored. Richard Dunstan then pulled one back with a strike into the corner from the spot. A deflected touch from a Richard Jones short corner into the roof of the net saw him soon add his 2nd and Swansea were now only 1 goal behind. With 10 minutes to go Richard Dunstan completed his 2nd half hattrick following a pass from a Richard Jones short corner to make the game level at 6 -6. Swansea were dominating the 2nd half and were also, surprisingly, looking very solid at the back. Matt Hope was making many of his usual weaving runs and there really looked only 1 winner.
With 5 minutes to go Steve Smith beat a few men down the left and slipped the ball down the line to Richard Dunstan who picked it up on the deadball line. Turning inside and working his way to the top of the D, he then smashed it clinically into the top left hand corner. Definitely not his usual type of finish, but a great way of putting Swansea 7 6 ahead. The students’ heads were clearly down after being 5 0 ahead and thinking they were cruising to an easy win and there was no way back for them now. Matt Hope added another with 2 minutes left to make the final score 8 6. Surely the best comeback since Liverpool in Istanbul and off to the squash club for the rugby.
